Winterfest 5K Recap

It is Christmas Eve..I don't know how that happened. I still have to go out and buy a couple of gift cards today, too. I don't know what's wrong with me. I've been a major procrastinor this Christmas.

Anyway, the race...we arrived late which was almost really bad. I had my son out that afternoon and we were doing a volunteer thing that had to do with Toys for Tots. I won't go into all the details, but it took WAY longer than I had planned. We barely had enough time to go home and get ready. We also did not eat anything while we were at the volunteer thing so needless to say, we were starving.

We got home, changed into our running stuff and the 4 of us rushed down to the race. My husband was a sick as a dog. I told him to stay home and he was going to, but changed his mind at the last minute and decided to run.

We managed to get a parking spot pretty close to the start. I opened the door to get out and what do I see laying on the ground...a wallet. The race was starting in 5 minutes so we didn't have to really think about what to do with the wallet so I just put it in our truck and said I'd deal with it afterward. I really didn't want to leave it laying on the ground because I was afraid somebody else would find it and that may not be a good thing (the wallet is a whole other story).

Did I mention how cold it was? It was freezing, but we were pretty well dressed. It was kind of windy, too, but I knew we'd warm up once the race started.

We met Alyson there with her family. She is having some hip flexor issues so she couldn't run. Her boys started out running with us. There were some awesome fireworks right before the race started. We were running slowly, but just doing it for fun. We were having a good time chatting back and forth about the race. We ran through Washington Park where they have Christamas light displays throughout. Normally, cars pay to drive through it (@ $20 a pop!), but they close it to cars for the race. It was fun running through and seeing it all up close.

The 11 year old had some issues right from the start. His hands were cold and that put him in a bad mood so we were trying to coax him out of that. My daughter's (the 10 year old) shoes came untied about the same time, but she refused to stop and tie them. Alyson's boys were just along for the ride -- no complaints from them. By the time we were halfway, Jacob was complaining that he didn't feel well. He said he was going to throw up. We certainly were not running fast so I think it was just him not eating that day. He had nothing in his stomach. I could tell he really wasn't feeling well so again we tried to just coax him through. Emily got a little tired, but didn't complain much. Jacob did have to walk a little and Alyson's kids went ahead once the walking started. From there on, we just kept taking turns running with each of them. In the end, Jacob and I finished together in around 34 minutes and Larry & Emily finished in 35. (Alyson's kids were 30 minutes). Everyone was happy and we celebrated with some pizza and wings afterward.

We met up with Gregg, Kathleen, and Brian before we left. They finished fast. I think Gregg did like 21 minutes and the others weren't that much behind. Their bib numbers were 1,2 & 3. Isn't that awesome?

I don't have my own pics from the race, but maybe I can try to "steal" some from Alyson's facebook page. We'll see. There are some good ones! I'll try to do that under a separate post.

In the meantime...Merry Christmas :-)

But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.
(Luke 2:10-11)

Slacker

I'm such a slacker with my posts lately. I'm so bad. I won't bore you with my excuses. The excuse is life, that's all. It's busy.

Tomorrow my whole family is running a 5K (husband & 2 kids). We did this one together last year. My daughter did great. Ran the whole thing. She had some problems on Thanksgiving though when we did the Turkey Trot so I'm hoping she'll have a comeback tomorrow. Last year, our son had problems in this race (he actually laid down in the road at one point and refused to get up). Luckily, my husband was running with him and I missed that whole scene. Larry vowed not to run with him in the future so I'm not sure what the plan is going to be for tomorrow. We'll have to discuss this.

I know I can't go "all out" because Emily is not comfortable running a race on her own. One of us will have to stay with her which is fine. It's just that my last 2 out of 3 races were not run for me..they were me running to keep someone else going. As much as I love this "coaching" position (especially with my kids) I think it's important to run your own race sooner or later. I hope that doesn't sound mean or selfish. Who am I kidding...I guess it is a little selfish.

So, my running has been cut back a bit now that winter is here. I am down to running 3 days per week instead of 4. Basically because it's too dark for me to go in the morning before the kids have school (the older they get, the earlier school starts and the earlier they have to get up). There's only a short window of time between when I get home from work and when they get home from school so it's nearly impossible for that to happen either. The only days I'm running on are my 2 days off plus my Saturday run. That's my winter!

Speaking of winter...it's stinking cold here in NY. It was 12 yesterday with a 0 windchill. I did manage to force myself out the door for a 3 mile run. I forgot how much I hate running in the cold. I just hate the cold. Period.

It's time for me to complain about sneakers now. Why in the world don't they design sneakers geared for cold weather running? (Or do they and I just don't know about them?) I wear 2 pairs of socks in the winter - one pair that's wool - so I'm warm enough when I leave my house. By the time I'm a few minutes into my run my feet feel like two blocks of ice. When I get close to 3 miles, they finally start thawing out. What can be done about that? Maybe I need different socks? Sneakers are designed to vent which is great in the summer, but our toes are freezing in the winter! Asics, Nike, Brooks, Mizuno...are you listening? I know they're not, but that's okay :)

Well, I'll let you know how the race goes tomorrow. Running with kids is always an adventure..anything can happen and usually does!

Oh - my sister-in-law (Kathleen), brother (Gregg) & Brian managed to score bib #1,2, & 3 for tomorrow's race! Isn't that cool?
